About the Author

John J. Herbert, DC is a retired chiropractor, educator, and health researcher with more than four decades of experience studying the underlying causes of chronic fatigue, dysautonomia, and stress-related disorders. A graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic (Class of 1980), Dr. Herbert spent years studying patients whose symptoms did not fit neatly into conventional diagnostic categories.

Throughout his career, Dr. Herbert observed a recurring pattern among patients suffering from persistent fatigue, brain fog, exercise intolerance, anxiety, and autonomic dysfunction—many of whom were told their labs were “normal” despite clear functional impairment. This long-standing clinical paradox became the foundation for his research into subclinical adrenal insufficiency and its relationship to modern fatigue syndromes.

Now retired from active practice, Dr. Herbert focuses on education and writing, translating complex physiology into clear, patient-centered explanations. His work bridges the gap between traditional endocrinology, functional medicine, and real-world clinical observation, offering a fresh perspective for patients, clinicians, and researchers alike.

About the Book

The Hidden Epidemic:
Subclinical Adrenal Insufficiency and the Fatigue Syndromes

The Hidden Epidemic challenges the conventional understanding of adrenal health and fatigue-related illness. Rather than focusing
solely on rare, end-stage conditions such as Addison’s disease, this book explores a functional gray zone—a state in which the adrenal
glands may technically test within “normal” ranges yet fail to meet the body’s ongoing demands.

Dr. Herbert presents a unifying framework that connects Subclinical Adrenal Insufficiency to a wide range of modern health conditions, including:

  • Chronic fatigue syndromes
  • Dysautonomia and POTS
  • Exercise intolerance and post-exertional malaise
  • Anxiety, sleep disturbances, and brain fog
  • Poor stress resilience and slow recovery

Drawing from years of experience, current medical literature, and physiological principles, the book explains why many patients fall through the cracks of standard testing—and what can be done to recognize and support recovery earlier, before full adrenal failure occurs.

Unlike alarmist or oversimplified approaches, The Hidden Epidemic emphasizes gentle, evidence-informed strategies, including low-exertion movement, nervous system regulation, lifestyle modification, and careful avoidance of overstimulation during recovery. The goal is not quick fixes, but restoring resilience in a body that has been pushed beyond its adaptive limits.

This Book Is Written For:

  • Patients searching for answers after being told “everything looks normal”
  • Healthcare professionals seeking a broader clinical framework
  • Anyone struggling with unexplained fatigue, stress intolerance, or autonomic symptoms
